Luciana Haill is concerned in esoteric ways of accessing ‘The Visionary’. To do this she explores and measures brainwaves during liminal stages of sleeping and specifically focuses on ‘Lucid Dreaming’ and further entraining brainwaves associated with ‘The Hypnagogic’ state experienced as we drift off. This stage is marked by a decrease in Beta and an increase in Theta brainwaves, so she sets about emulating this in fully awake participants who experience her art. She is artist in residence in the Department of Psychology in Greenwich University London, and her artworks are research-led, developing following encounters and (where possible) training with pioneers in her field. Her participatory installations, talks and performances have taken place internationally including Mexico City, Hawaii and Slovenia. Her techniques involve Neurofeedback with EEG (passive, surface mounted brainwave monitoring) – a training process using technology to provide you with more information about what your brain is doing. and interviewing participants about their experiences. She researches the neural correlates, and creates stimulating contemporary sensory light and sound entrainment devices in installations expressing the surreal psycho-phenomenological characteristics preceding an Altered State of Consciousness, such as within a vivid / lucid dreaming in her Fine Artworks.
See and head the outcomes here as 10 minutes is compressed to 1 minute 43 seconds, all sounds are triggered by EEG and all Entoptic and Phosphene ephemeral visuals are experienced by the percipient in the dentist chair, behind closed eyelids.
The artwork involves a brainwave monitor, so all the sounds heard are modulated and controlled via the participant – their EEG signal is being recorded in realtime and output as dynamic changes and interaction within a sonic score. A sonification we can hear manifests, as do ‘Entoptic’ patterns, phosphenes and many ‘non-linear narratives’ making a unique phenomenal artwork for each participant (their eyes are closed, and they are wearing headphones in a dentist chair). The Phrontesterion is driven by their brain’s response to a Theta wave (4-8 Hz) entrainment protocol by lights (PandoraStar & Dreamachine), in return they receive access to subconscious idling, reveries and tranquility.
The video was captured by Go Pro and shows the 10 minute experience condensed to one minute.. the following visual analysis is the EEG of the participant made using IBVA software and captured using a 2 channel Brainmachine monitor ( http://www.brainmachine.co.uk) all the sounds are made from the EEG controlling the score, custom Brain Switch Audio Unit plugins are in the library to enable this for each frequency bandwidth from the Left and Right sides of the frontal region ( FP1 and FP2 )
See you on 30.06.17 in Breaking Convention, 9.30am, in The Sabina Rooms
I have a very visual Keynote illustrating my talk during :
NON DRUG STATES: MIND & MACHINE :
Luciana Haill ‘#Flicker, #EEG & #Dreamachines’ 30th June, @breakingcon
Revelations by Flicker, Dreamachines and Electroencephalographic signals in art
How did ordinary tools in the Neurophysiology department become means for spiritual enlightenment ?
Advance booked tickets to the entire weekend symposium essential.
Book tickets for an individual session from £10 for 20 minutes (with optional extra for brainwave recording )with PandoraStar here :
05.05.17 – 06.05.17 Hackstock2017 – Opening times – 10.30am-18.30pm. Luciana and her team offers you the opportunity to book an individual session with the latest technological genius in psychedelic strobing white light, and potentially have your brainwaves monitored and recorded. Just curious ? You can compare this with a Dreamachine – an iconic kinetic light sculpture setup in our Arts Laboratory. Working with the Brainmachine (IBVA) EEG monitors Luciana and her team can combine recording the brainwaves of participants whilst they are experiencing the wonderful phenomena ‘PandoraStar’ – the latest in Stroboscopic Light Therapies. This is a non-intrusive form of light therapy, which
concentrates the mind and involves the client closing their eyes under a flickering light machine. The session can provide a client with relief from tension, relieving stiff muscles and joints in the physical body. The session is highly relaxing and can have a profound relief upon the negative effects of stress.
We will also have a classic Dreamachine designed by artist Bryon Gysin in the 1960s spinning proudly on a record player for drop-in anytime. I will also take part in Talkaoke at 11.30am on the friday and have the East Room setup as an ongoing Hypnagogic Art of Neuroscience laboratory with Brainmachine (IBVA) and bookable individual Pandorastar sessions.
The Trampery, Old Street, London, EC1V 9EY, United Kingdom
Hosted by The Institute of Philosophy – Friday 19th May 2017, The Phrontesterion to feature in ‘The Open Senses Symposium’ bringing a weekend of art and science events to the capital.
I will bring The Phrontesterion into The Open Senses Symposium for one day only.
Come experience enhanced Theta waves and your subsequent Reveries in the oil-filled, air powered dentist chair whilst your brainwaves are monitored and create your own unique soundscape. You will be guided by a flickering Dreamachine with your eyes closed, and interviewed by the artist afterwards to discover if you saw Entoptic patterns, phosphenes, form constants, visions and new ideas .
“Rub out the Word”
For Gysin the way of permutation was the ‘way out’, the means of transcending our physical existence. The dreamachine was a similar device, creating pattern after pattern within the brain itself, turning image upon image, light upon light until the infinite became possible.
Buy a complete Dreamachine setup here : all you need is a record player capable of 45rpm and a plug socket. It ships worldwide inside a 1 metre long cardboard tube ready to assemble, and with a 5 metre candle-twist power cable for suspension of the Nanobulb from a ceiling, overhang or beam with a simple cup-hook.
No Virtual Reality suite has yet come up with anything near the fluidity, range and inventiveness of image of the dreamachine, and none is likely to. The dreamachine, whether it reflects physiological patterns, or acts as a gateway into the personal, collective or cosmic unconscious; whether it is meaningful or meaningless, has the immense advantage of allowing us to respond to ourselves. It provides access into our own brain. It is literally a machine that produces dreams.
Gysin himself reflected on the type of vision engendered by the use of dreamachines: ‘I think it scares people… Because of the fact that it deals with that area of interior vision which has never been tapped before. Except in history, one knows of cases — in French history, Catherine de Medici for example, had Nostradamus sitting up on the top of a tower… he used to sit up there and with the fingers of his hands spread like this would flicker his fingers over closed eyes, and would interpret his visions in a way which were of influence to her in regard to her political powers… they were like instructions from a higher power… ‘They could also foretell bad things. Peter the Great also had somebody who sat on the top of a tower and flickered his fingers like that across his closed eyelids… And any of us today can go and look out the window or lie in a field and do it, and you get a great deal of the type of visions — in fact, it’s the same area in the alpha bands of excitation of the brain — within the alpha band between eight and thirteen flickers a second. And the dreamachine produces this continuously, without interruption, unless you yourself interrupt it by opening your eyes like that.’
Not suitable for persons with photo sensitive epilepsy or migraines.
Last week in Watermans Art Gallery during the interactive weekender I was one of the artists interviewed by ManotoTV – for their current Iranian TV Technology programme, The presenter took the seat and had a full flicker and EEG recording made, with post session interview to hear what he experienced! The group exhibition ‘Technology is not neutral’ is featured from 10:20, and you can play from 15.00 to view my work.
