See you on 30.06.17 in Breaking Convention, 9.30am, in The Sabina Rooms
I have a very visual Keynote illustrating my talk during :
NON DRUG STATES: MIND & MACHINE :
Luciana Haill ‘#Flicker, #EEG & #Dreamachines’ 30th June, @breakingcon
Revelations by Flicker, Dreamachines and Electroencephalographic signals in art
How did ordinary tools in the Neurophysiology department become means for spiritual enlightenment ?
Advance booked tickets to the entire weekend symposium essential.
I will be taking part in an event on Sunday 14th May in The House of Alchemy in central Brighton. The pop-up gallery is located in the heart of Brighton’s cultural quarter opposite Brighton Dome and Pavilion.
Sarah Janes presents a talk about Mnemosyne, a member of the illustrious ranks of Greek Goddesses. Mnemosyne (Memory) was conceived in a union between Ouranos and Gaia (Heaven and Earth). The power of Memory is the force that enables mortals to enter the unconscious, collect the treasures of the divine and bring them in to the light of day.
Luciana Haill invites participants to explore and measure their own brainwaves during this invocation of Mnemosyne using a classic Dreammachine and a PandoraStar hypnagogic light technology. She is concerned with esoteric ways of accessing the Visionary, using psychotronic and contemporary photic entrainment devices, perchance to dream, enter a Hypnagogic state, inducing dream-like visions, entoptics and journeys.
Sun 14 May, 7pm-10pm

Book tickets for an individual session from £10 for 20 minutes (with optional extra for brainwave recording )with PandoraStar here :
05.05.17 – 06.05.17 Hackstock2017 – Opening times – 10.30am-18.30pm. Luciana and her team offers you the opportunity to book an individual session with the latest technological genius in psychedelic strobing white light, and potentially have your brainwaves monitored and recorded. Just curious ? You can compare this with a Dreamachine – an iconic kinetic light sculpture setup in our Arts Laboratory. Working with the Brainmachine (IBVA) EEG monitors Luciana and her team can combine recording the brainwaves of participants whilst they are experiencing the wonderful phenomena ‘PandoraStar’ – the latest in Stroboscopic Light Therapies. This is a non-intrusive form of light therapy, which
concentrates the mind and involves the client closing their eyes under a flickering light machine. The session can provide a client with relief from tension, relieving stiff muscles and joints in the physical body. The session is highly relaxing and can have a profound relief upon the negative effects of stress.
We will also have a classic Dreamachine designed by artist Bryon Gysin in the 1960s spinning proudly on a record player for drop-in anytime. I will also take part in Talkaoke at 11.30am on the friday and have the East Room setup as an ongoing Hypnagogic Art of Neuroscience laboratory with Brainmachine (IBVA) and bookable individual Pandorastar sessions.

Hosted by The Institute of Philosophy – Friday 19th May 2017, The Phrontesterion to feature in ‘The Open Senses Symposium’ bringing a weekend of art and science events to the capital.
I will bring The Phrontesterion into The Open Senses Symposium for one day only.
Come experience enhanced Theta waves and your subsequent Reveries in the oil-filled, air powered dentist chair whilst your brainwaves are monitored and create your own unique soundscape. You will be guided by a flickering Dreamachine with your eyes closed, and interviewed by the artist afterwards to discover if you saw Entoptic patterns, phosphenes, form constants, visions and new ideas .
I went to see the show at the weekend and thought it was excellent. I really enjoyed it. I thought all the pieces were of very high quality. I particularly liked your installation.
I thought all the elements hung together really well to give a powerful experience. The Victoriana strand worked very well through the artefacts and the drawings. The soundscape was also really atmospheric and bound it all together – were the sounds generated from an EEG?
Anyway, great show! – P.H.
I loved every single detail of that room! – A. T.
The following image is a still from a recording I made of the brainwaves of a subject whilst dreaming – we can see they are in light REM sleep , close to awakening, with entrained light Theta waves ( hypnopompic) on their left preFrontal and their right displays a rhythmic oscillating Eye movement close to Delta that matched the recalled narrative of riding a unicorn along a beach when interviewed after waking !
This was made using IBVA 2 channel Brainmachine and IBVA5 software.
The video will be mapped onto a dream journal displaying a vivid dream with recall, amongst the other found and ready-made objects inside glass cloches and a Victorian Linnet cage as part of “Sleep Cycles” 2016. Will be on show in Brighton in Phoenix from September 3rd -25h as part of Technology is Not Neutral group show.
03.09.16 – 25.09.16 : Technology is Not Neutral, Phoenix, Brighton
‘Sleep Cycles’ – mixed media installation featuring the EEG recording of a Vivid Dream projected over a book in a bed, a series of cloches containing dream and sleep elements over 8 hours and illustrations made from prolonged states of Reverie from 2014. A vivid dream recorded using EEG is projected onto an old book, in it, a collection of dreams.. lies amongst victorian cloches containing vital sleep cycle elements including a 14 million year old fragment of meteorite and Mugwort capsules.
“Technology Is Not Neutral” is a new touring exhibition project curated by Gordana Novakovic, Anna Dumitriu and Irini Papadimitriou which launches at Phoenix Brighton as part of Brighton Digital Festival. The exhibition highlights and investigates the work of a group of women artists in the field of digital arts. The title refers to a quote by Donna Haraway taken from her Cyborg Manifesto. It includes significant and newly commissioned work by pioneering and contemporary female digital artists. The exhibition features work by Ghislaine Boddington, Susan Collins, Laura Dekker, Anna Dumitriu, Bhavani Esapathi, Julie Freeman, Kate Genevieve, Sue Gollifer, Luciana Haill, Nina Kov, and Gordana Novakovic.

Measuring the Brainwave signals (EEG) of 2 guests during a specially arranged Sound healing session, with large gongs, singing bowls and 3 performers. The EEG files will be published here shortly when converted into movie files, we are looking for any entrainment of brainwave frequencies during the session as well as subjective response to the effects that the amazing sounds and voices played.

Installation Phrontesterion “I AM THAT I AM” ( Early 17th century: from Greek phrontistērion, from phrontistēs ‘deep thinker’, from phrontizein ‘be thoughtful’, from phrontis ‘thought’.) Edited to incorporate ‘test’ for non-linear thinking, visions, hallucinations, or Entoptic patterns. Sonification during the monitoring of brainwaves, a test of the receptivity to “flicker” from the Dreamachine. The voices can guide, mock, relax, or distract the participant, the volume of each track and its presence in the audible mix, is entirely controlled by the brainwaves interacting with the composition. Too much can become far too much, and the ideal presence of significant Theta waves and Alpha in the EEG , are rewarded with the mantra penned by Gysin, inspired by God to Moses in the Bible.
